Surgical Procedures
Foot & Ankle
The ankle joint is made up of 3 bones:
- tibia - shin bone
- fibula - long slender bone of lower leg
- talus - ankle bone
The Foot is made up of 26 bones:
- 7 Tarsals - bones that form the heel and back of the foot
- 5 Metatarsals - long bones of the feet
- 14 Phalanges - bones of toes
The bones of both the ankle and foot are supported and stabilised by a number of ligaments and tendons.
Disease, injury or 'wear & tear' to these bones, ligaments or tendons may necessitate a range of investigative or surgical procedures, leading to reconstruction or repair.
The main procedures conducted by Canberra Orthopaedic Group specialist surgeons are listed below. They are explained more fully in the surgical info sheets. Simply click on the surgical info sheets link at the bottom of the page to download and read, or print the pdf file.
