Surgical Procedures
Knee
The knee joint is the largest joint in the body. It is also the joint most vulnerable to damage because of the stresses it is subjected to both in day-to-day living and in sport, with up to 4 times the body's weight being taken through the joint when standing.
The joint is made up of a complex system of bones, specialised cartilage (meniscus), ligaments, and tendons. The stability of the knee depends on the ligaments and tendons, which are prone to damage.
Disease, injury or 'wear & tear' to these bones, ligaments or tendons may necessitate a range of investigative or surgical procedures, leading to reconstruction, repair or replacement.
The main procedures conducted by Canberra Orthopaedic Group specialist surgeons are listed below. They are explained more fully in the surgical info sheets. Simply click on the surgical info sheets link at the bottom of the page to download and read, or print the pdf file.
