Surgical Procedures
Hip
The hip joint is a 'ball and socket' joint, which makes it capable of a full range of motion (flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, rotation and circumduction).
The ball of the joint is the head of the femur. This sits into the cup of the acetabulum, which is part of the pelvis. The joint is surrounded by the joint capsule which is a bag-like structure formed by ligaments. Inside the capsule is a small amount of fluid that acts as a lubricant for the joint.
Ligaments provide stabilisation of joint and large muscles insert into the bones above and below the joint.
Disease, injury or 'wear & tear' may necessitate a range of investigative or surgical procedures leading to reconstruction, repair or replacement.
The main procedures conducted by Canberra Orthopaedic Group specialist surgeons are listed below. They are explained more fully in the surgical info sheets. Simply click on the surgical info sheets link at the bottom of the page to download and read, or print the pdf file.
