Dr Al Burns graduated in medicine from the University of Sydney in 1995, and completed his advanced orthopaedic training in Sydney, attaining his Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2004. He then completed a further 18 months of fellowship training; six months with the Canberra Orthopaedic Group in hip and knee replacement and reconstruction, and then 12 months in primary and revision hip and knee replacement, and hip arthroscopy at the London Health Sciences Centre, University of Western Ontario, Canada.

Dr Burns is currently a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the Canberra Hospital, Calvary Hospital, Calvary John James Hospital, and the National Capital Private Hospital.

Dr Burns specialises in orthopaedic and trauma surgery, primary and revision joint replacement, reconstruction of the hip and knee joints and arthroscopy of the hip and knee joints.
